BASSETT-SMITH, Derek Anthony 20 July 1983 - 31 July 2013 Derek passed away peacefully on the 31st of July 2013 after a 7-year battle with cancer. He leaves behind a loving wife Alicia and beautiful baby girl Lily, his parents John and Joan, brothers Chris and Mike, and many other family members and friends in Canada and New Zealand, all who will miss him dearly. Derek fought his disease bravely and despite the gross unfairness of the challenge he managed to live a full life with a large and loving group of friends and family. He was an example of extreme strength and grace under pressure, and prospered against untenable odds for longer than anyone could have predicted. Derek was a pilot, outdoorsman, and an active and excellent RCMP officer before his illness prevented him from working further. He was supported in his battle and helped by many special people and professionals. His family wishes to express their most sincere gratitude and admiration to the RCMP and Dr. Verster for the incredible support they provided. Derek will be missed by many but most of all by his wonderful young family. A public service will be held at the Coast Capri Hotel in Kelowna on August 17th, 2013 at 3pm and is open to all who knew Derek and would like to attend. He is gone, but never forgotten. ALLSOP, BETTY LOUISE Born May 12th 1946, passed away peacefully August 1st 2013. She lives on in the hearts of John, Michael and Michelle Allsop, her brothers, family and friends all over the world. Upon the passing of a loved one, we typically look back over their lives remembering who that person was in life, their accomplishments, their contributions, the milestones of their journey. In some cases, as in this one, these would simply be too many to list. Rather, we choose to encapsulate Betty Allsop's ethos in a few words, describing both what propelled her and what her wishes were for those that were in her life. Treat every day and every moment of every day as an opportunity to embrace someone in need, make them feel loved, give them hope and inspire compassion through every deed. Smile with humility and laugh with gratitude for all the blessings that come your way, and even in the darkest moments, remember that the sun will shine after the Morning Star has cleared away the night's pain. Open your heart and love, wear your heart on your sleeve and be vulnerable. This is the only way to live true to who you are; disappointments and suffering are parts of life, but when you look back, know that you loved completely and that you held nothing back, because this is the rose of Wisdom and the essence of Love. Finally, see everything through a child's eyes, your child's eyes. Dress all things in the soft threads of innocence, for in Simplicity lie the keys to the universe. Savour every meal with gusto, giggle with your daughter, caress your son's cheek, kiss your husband with tenderness. Awake refreshed after every nap, let your dog kiss you and don't be afraid of telling a stranger that you love them. These are my mother's deeds, this is her legacy, this is the currency of life. Thank you for everything you taught us mom. We honour you now and in every thought for you are now eternal.

CLAUSEN, GARY MELVIN Of Summerland BC, born June 25, 1957 passed away peacefully with his family by his side in Penticton Regional Hospital on August 6, 2013. Throughout his life, Gary enjoyed many sports including hockey, baseball, golf, and fishing. These activities, however, were far surpassed by the love and time he had for his family and the joy that they brought him. Gary was always eager to lend his support as well as reach out a helping hand to others. His willingness to help out family and friends without expectations made him a truly respected and conscientious business man. He had a remarkable sense of humor and wit he loved to share with everyone around him. But above all he was a devoted husband, committed father and proud grandfather (Papa). His peers will always appreciate him by his integrity and quality workmanship within the community. His dedication as a coach was to inspire fun and fair play and to develop life skills. Involved in Summerland Minor Hockey for almost a decade, he inspired many. Gary was a kind, fine, good man whose memory will be captured in our hearts. He will be forever and always loved by his wife of 29 years, Kathy; his daughter Nicole (Jesse) Clausen, his sons James Clausen and Thomas (Savanna) Clausen, as well as his delightful grandson Brandon.
